EDITOR: block Style inspector (reference-style) in the shared Inspector morph; carry over calternal.js #127/#169 (grill) #633"
By kayg — Open

Owner question (2026-10-01): "What happened to the style inspector for the block editor? Was that ever logged to fj issues?"

Answer: not in this tracker. It was carried over from calternal.js as open items #127 (mobile reference-style block inspector + swipe-to-select) and #169 (unified inspector sheet), listed in the editor-package handoff (2026-09-25), but never filed in kayg/calternal. Earlier grill notes (2026-09-07, Q2) recommended "selection toolbar + block context menu + slash insertion, with an inspector hidden by default".
Scope (grill first: OPEN): a block Style inspector for the selected block(s), reference-style, hosted in the Tab Bar morph inspector (#583, one inspector surface, no new panel):

  • text style (Body/H1–H3/quote/code), list type, checklist;
  • block colour/highlight (from theme tokens only), alignment, indentation;
  • block actions: turn into, duplicate, move, Copy link to block, delete;
  • on phones: swipe-to-select blocks + the same inspector sheet (#127);
  • what persists in Markdown vs presentation-only (no new Markdown dialect without a storage contract).
    Grill questions: which style controls are in v1; whether per-block colour is stored (and how, in Markdown); how it relates to the shorter formatting toolbar (#604: inline marks + "Text style" menu).

Owner decisions (2026-10-01, editor inspector grill round 1). Supersedes the hosting idea in #633

Hosting: when a block is selected, the Tab Bar morphs into the inspector items (Format · Style · Info; Insert later). Choosing an item expands the morph in place and in size, like the keyboard-shortcuts card (no right sidebars). On phones: a presentation sheet (#530).
Format (per selected block):

  • text styles: Title / Subtitle / Heading / Strong / Body / Caption (→ H1 / H2 / H3 / bold paragraph / body / small);
  • B I S code;
  • bullet / numbered / task / toggle lists; indent / outdent;
  • alignment;
  • decorations: Focus (side bar) and Block (background);
  • 12 colour swatches from theme tokens;
  • no per-block font.
    Image blocks: size (Auto / Large / Full), fit (Fill / Fit), caption, alt text.
    Storage (file over app): formatting that Markdown cannot express lives in the note's frontmatter, keyed by block ID (calternal.blocks: { "^id": { color, align, decoration } }). The body stays plain Markdown; removing the map only loses presentation.
    Style (per note, in frontmatter): backdrop (none / colour / gradient / picture + blur), card colour, text colour, cover image, separator (four line weights: extra light, light, regular, strong; one decorative style later), font, wide page. Defaults come from Settings.
    Card opacity + blur sliders: the global default in Settings → Editor (not Appearance); per-note override in Style; live preview; light-mode contrast guarded by #588.
    Info: Page Info (created, updated, author, location, word count / reading time, backlinks, attachments) and Actions (the block/document action list from the #581 registry with shortcuts: move up/down/top/bottom, move to another note / daily note, duplicate, copy, copy as Markdown / plain text, Copy link to block, delete). AI review later.
    Motion: morph open/close with the shared spring; tab switch slide + crossfade; section collapse; the swatch ring spring; style changes crossfade on the document; panel content slides when the selection changes; reduced motion respected.
    Delivery: ship in small slices deployed separately; the owner tests each visually and iterates. Order: (1) TOC rail (#…), (2) card opacity/blur sliders, (3) Format for text, (4) Format for images, (5) Style, (6) Info.
    Open (round 2): exactly when the morph appears (block selection vs caret); reaching Style/Info with no block selected; multi-block selection.
    Rule: do not name other products in code, commits or issues; reference screenshots stay out of the repo.

Owner decisions, round 2 (2026-10-01): R1 agreed: the morph appears only on explicit block selection (handle click, Escape while typing, ⌘I); typing alone keeps the normal Tab Bar. R3 agreed: multi-selection applies to all, with a "mixed" state and one Undo. R2 agreed with this shape: with no block selected, ⌘I (or note ⋯ → Style) morphs the Tab Bar into two items, Style · Info. The capsule shrinks to fit two items with the shared spring (the same width rule as the Tab Bar); selecting a block adds Format (the capsule grows to three) without closing the open panel.
