Owner report (2026-10-05, production, desktop Calendar): "we need to scale these better, look at the overlap"

In the sidebar mini month, the selected day's outlined circle (4) and today's filled circle (5) overlap each other: the circles are larger than the day column pitch at the current sidebar width, so adjacent day markers collide (event dots above/below also crowd them).

Expected

  • Day markers never overlap or touch at any sidebar width (including the minimum resize width) and any text size: marker diameter = min(token size, column pitch − a gap token); the numeral scales with it within the type scale, centred.
  • Selected (outline), today (fill) and selected-today keep their distinct looks at every size; the event dots sit inside the row without crossing the marker.
  • When the sidebar is very narrow, prefer shrinking markers to one step down over truncating; never reflow to fewer than 7 columns.
  • Tokens only; no numeric literals.

Evidence

e2e: at sidebar min / default / max width and 100%/125% text size, assert no two adjacent day markers' rects intersect and each has ≥ 2 px gap. 4x crops of a week row containing selected + today + a day with events, light + dark.

Completed #1149 on job/minimonth-1149.

Built: MiniMonth day markers now scale to their seven-column pitch with a token gap. Numerals shrink with the marker; selected, today, and selected-today retain their distinct styles. Event dots have a separate row slot. The grid stays at seven columns.

Files: packages/ui/src/tokens.css; packages/ui/src/components/calendar/MiniMonth.svelte; apps/web/e2e/calendar-minimonth-1149.mjs.

Commit: 9b2697831506feebdf47822fdba089bfba5fdace — Scale Calendar mini-month markers to column pitch.

UX gaps closed: The production e2e check covers minimum/default/maximum sidebar widths at 100%/125% UI scale, asserts six weeks and seven columns, checks at least 2 CSS px between adjacent markers, verifies selected/today/selected-today styling, and checks Event dots stay below markers and inside the row. It uses the keyboard-operable separator and a real CalDAV Event. The eight review screenshots use macOS platform emulation and cover phone/tablet/desktop in light/dark, plus 4× crops of a row containing selected, today, and an Event.

UX gaps left: No interaction or geometry gap found in the requested scope. The attached screenshots are ready for the orchestrator's visual review.

Decisions: DESIGN §34 does not specify a MiniMonth marker cap or numeral ratio. The marker uses the smaller of its size token and the seven-column pitch minus a gap token. The numeral uses a 0.7 marker-diameter ratio, capped by the caption type token. The Event dot occupies a dedicated lower row slot.

Verification:

  • cargo fmt --check: PASS (exit 0; no stdout/stderr). git diff --check: PASS (exit 0; no output).

Follow-up from the #1149 review (orchestrator): hovering a mini-month day draws a dark rounded SQUARE behind the day while the selected/today markers are circles (minimonth-1149-week-row-4x-dark.png: square behind the selected 6). Hover and keyboard focus use the same circle geometry as the markers (one shape per day), and a hovered selected day shows one combined circle, never a square plus a circle.

#1149 final report

Built

MiniMonth hover and keyboard focus now paint the same circular marker shape as selected/today states. A hovered or focused selected day stays on one combined circle. The review test captures default week-row, hover and keyboard-focus states, then checks phone, tablet and desktop at 390/820/1440 px in light and dark with macOS emulation.

UX gaps closed

Hover and keyboard focus use one circle per day, including when the selected day is hovered or focused. The focused test now waits for the animated interaction paint before checking it. Visual evidence covers the required device widths, both themes and macOS shortcut rendering.

UX gaps left

None found for this follow-up.

Decisions

DESIGN §34 does not prescribe this MiniMonth hover treatment. I used the existing day button as the single circular paint surface and retained the selected/today fill while hover/focus is active. The exact-source performance pins were refreshed to match the edited MiniMonth file; no rule or limit changed.

The first run of the existing calendar-minical-review.mjs stopped in openSidebar: it waits for the removed section[aria-labelledby="calendar-views"] sidebar section (30 s timeout). Calendar view choices now live in the header per DESIGN §34/#1112. I am updating that review script to use the current header radio control so its range-band assertions remain runnable. The focused #1149 production e2e already passes.

#1149 complete

The square was the one-column .range-band cap: a one-day Day view set a one-cell width, and the pill-shaped band sat under the date marker. MiniMonth.svelte now leaves all band segments collapsed when the active range has one date. The date marker remains the only shape; multi-day week bands keep their existing transform behavior.

The production-browser e2e now checks computed backgrounds for every date button and week row. Any non-transparent day-cell background must belong to a marker circle. It also checks that a one-day range has no visible band. Captures use macOS platform emulation and cover phone, tablet, and desktop in light and dark themes.

Multi-day ranges are unchanged. ### 4x state crops (dark / light) | State | Dark | Light | | --- | --- | --- | | Selected | ![Selected, dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/193c391a-47bf-458b-82d1-a1dbc946c732) | ![Selected, light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/c138e50a-25b6-4415-9dc1-898af5a25e92) | | Today | ![Today, dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/a2d8a8ac-e825-4696-8443-5cd45d5ba1c9) | ![Today, light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/ba2d1fed-7bfe-4467-b9f8-09617888d43c) | | Selected + today | ![Selected and today, dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/30951130-7d80-469d-b44d-6fa3092e4b6c) | ![Selected and today, light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/53dcb850-4060-46d0-867d-e63724e6ecb3) | | Hover | ![Hover, dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/26ee87f7-e2d8-4175-a985-a0d92f627a6d) | ![Hover, light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/aa5b3c5d-1bd2-4f6e-84d9-86a8da86814d) | | Focus | ![Focus, dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/bb0bee0c-2b42-46ec-9f00-f49298909675) | ![Focus, light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/9aeff78f-f51c-4bca-b2a2-531ede0c804f) | ### Responsive screenshots - Phone: [dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/2d191bb7-8a2c-494e-b7c9-d8f488fab7fd), [light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/21a9f520-0d37-4447-8522-099c81062ceb) - Tablet: [dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/5db74fca-ff0f-46c8-aa2b-930032f6ddab), [light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/b17a6e39-098f-438d-95ce-d99f43f26ae1) - Desktop: [dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/b3644252-ec17-42fe-9b26-6a55fbc8b7a9), [light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/ff93dd31-d21c-47d6-acde-09e246dfb4c7) - Week band rows: [dark](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/0c7f186b-07bb-4077-bf1f-7a667c256ee0), [light](https://git.kayg.org/attachments/005844f8-d29d-4077-a47e-5224bef68138)
